With dozens of garage door brands on the market, which ones are actually worth buying? Here's an honest comparison from a professional installer who works with all of them.

As a garage door professional, I've installed hundreds of doors from every major brand. Some are excellent. Some look great in a showroom but fail within a few years. Here's my honest take on the brands we carry and recommend — with no manufacturer bias, just real-world experience.

1. Clopay — Best Overall

Clopay is the #1 residential garage door brand in North America, and for good reason. Their build quality is consistently excellent across all price points, their warranty coverage is among the best in the industry (limited lifetime on most steel doors), and they offer the widest selection of styles, colors, and finishes. The Clopay Gallery Collection and Reserve Collection are particularly impressive for homeowners who want a premium look without going to full custom wood.

  • Best for: Homeowners who want the best combination of quality, style, and warranty
  • Price range: Mid to premium ($900–$3,500 installed)
  • Warranty: Limited lifetime on steel doors
  • Weakness: Slightly higher price than CHI or DoorLink at the entry level

2. CHI Overhead Doors — Best Value

CHI (Consolidated Hardware Industries) makes excellent doors at a price point that's hard to beat. They're manufactured in Arthur, Illinois, and their construction quality rivals Clopay at a 10–20% lower price. The CHI 2250 and 2283 series are among the most popular doors we install — great insulation, clean looks, and solid hardware.

  • Best for: Homeowners who want quality without paying premium prices
  • Price range: Budget to mid ($800–$2,500 installed)
  • Warranty: Limited lifetime on most models
  • Weakness: Fewer style options than Clopay at the high end

3. Hormann — Best Premium Option

Hormann is a German manufacturer with a reputation for precision engineering and exceptional insulation values. Their doors regularly achieve R-18 to R-32, making them the top choice for energy-conscious homeowners. The build quality is exceptional — these doors feel and operate differently from American brands. The price reflects that.

  • Best for: Homeowners who prioritize insulation, durability, and premium feel
  • Price range: Premium ($1,400–$5,000+ installed)
  • Warranty: 2-year full, limited lifetime on panels
  • Weakness: Higher price point, longer lead times on custom orders

4. DoorLink — Best Budget Option

DoorLink makes solid, reliable doors at the most accessible price point. They're not flashy, but they're well-built and come with decent warranty coverage. If budget is the primary concern and you need a functional, durable door without premium features, DoorLink delivers.

  • Best for: Budget-conscious homeowners who need a reliable replacement
  • Price range: Budget ($700–$1,800 installed)
  • Warranty: Limited lifetime on steel panels
  • Weakness: Fewer style options, basic hardware

5. Haas Door — Best Made-in-USA Option

Haas Door is manufactured in Wauseon, Ohio, and is a solid mid-range option with good customization capabilities. Their doors are well-regarded for durability and they offer a wide range of window options and color choices. A good choice for homeowners who want American manufacturing and more customization than DoorLink offers.

  • Best for: Homeowners who want American-made with good customization
  • Price range: Mid-range ($900–$2,500 installed)
  • Warranty: Limited lifetime
  • Weakness: Less widely available than Clopay or CHI
