Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting: 8 Common Problems Solved
From dead remotes to blinking lights, garage door opener problems are frustrating. Here are 8 common issues and exactly how to fix them.
Your garage door opener is one of the most-used devices in your home — the average household operates it 3–5 times per day. When it stops working, it disrupts your whole routine. Before calling a technician, run through these 8 common opener problems. Many have simple DIY fixes.
1. Remote Doesn't Work
Start with the obvious: replace the battery. Most remote batteries last 1–2 years. If a new battery doesn't help, try reprogramming the remote (consult your opener's manual). If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, the issue is the remote or its signal range. If neither works, the problem is with the opener itself.
2. Door Reverses Before Closing
If the door starts to close and then immediately reverses, the most common cause is the safety sensors at the bottom of the door tracks. These infrared sensors must be aligned and unobstructed. Check for debris blocking the sensor beam, and look for a blinking light on one of the sensors — a solid light means aligned, blinking means misaligned. Gently adjust the sensor bracket until both lights are solid.
3. Door Reverses After Hitting the Floor
If the door closes fully and then immediately opens back up, the close-limit setting is off. The opener thinks the door hasn't reached the floor yet and reverses to prevent damage. Adjust the close-limit screw on the opener unit — consult your manual for the exact location and direction to turn it.
4. Opener Runs But Door Doesn't Move
If you can hear the motor running but the door doesn't move, check the disconnect cord. Most openers have a red rope that disconnects the trolley from the drive for manual operation. If this was pulled (intentionally or accidentally), the opener will run without moving the door. Reconnect it by pulling the cord toward the door until you hear a click.
5. Door Opens But Won't Close
This is almost always a sensor problem. The safety sensors prevent the door from closing if they detect something in the path. Check that both sensors are clean, properly aligned, and that nothing is blocking the beam. Direct sunlight can also interfere with sensor signals — try shading the sensors temporarily to test.
6. Opener Makes a Grinding Noise
A grinding noise from the opener unit often indicates a stripped gear. The plastic drive gear inside chain and belt-drive openers can wear out after years of use. This is a repair that requires opening the opener housing and replacing the gear — a job for a technician, though gear kits are available for DIYers.
7. Wall Button Works But Remote Doesn't
If the wall button operates the door but the remote doesn't, the issue is isolated to the remote or the antenna. Check that the antenna wire hanging from the opener unit is straight and unobstructed. Try reprogramming the remote. If neither helps, the remote may need to be replaced.
8. Opener Light Doesn't Work
First, check the bulb — most openers use standard A19 bulbs. However, LED bulbs can sometimes interfere with the radio frequency of the remote. If your remote stopped working after you switched to LED bulbs, try switching back to an incandescent or using an LED bulb specifically designed for garage door openers.
If your opener is more than 10–15 years old and experiencing repeated problems, replacement is often more cost-effective than continued repairs. Modern LiftMaster openers offer Wi-Fi connectivity, battery backup, and significantly quieter operation.
